My destiel fix-it fic that I started writing with my cousin right after Cas went to super-hell has finally been finished and posted (after 2 years)!!

Read it here.

If I ever eventually figure out How To HTML, I will be posting my "Will Graham's Rate My Professor page" fic to AO3. I keep giggling to myself whenever I think about it. But I can't bear to post it without coding it to actually look like the actual RMP site. I don't really have the know-how yet for this. Halp!

My time in fandom has been filled with a lot (a LOT) of trial and error. Sometimes I want to launch right in to a new aspect of fandom but I end up being unable to find the resources I need. So as a gift to my fandom friends, and especially for any newcomers to fandom who happen to find this post, I wanted to make a little guide slash list of all those sweet, sweet resources I've collected over the years. If you read this and think, "Ooh, you should include [x]!" please please leave a comment, I would love to check out more tips, tricks, and resources!

Love,
Xenerik

Oh G-d I'm truly going insane over Interview with the Vampire (2022). Just finished watching episode 4. First of all: Claudia is so me. The hundred diaries, the hormones, the attitude... I love her character and I think Bailey Bass did an excellent job.

Second: I NEED MORE. NOW.

Third: Jacob Anderson continues to astound me. I never saw GoT but fr they let him stand in the shadows for ten years on that show??? When he's capable of this??? His acting is so *chefs kiss* I can't stand it. The way his voice catches when Claudia's dying and he wants Lestat to save her...........arghhhhhhh

I watched the whole episode giggling with glee and then rewound it and watched it all over again.

Fourth: Imagine getting banned from social media for saying what Louis du Pointe du Lac did to Daniel Molloy / What did he do to Daniel Molloy / He fucked that old man

Fifth: "Claudia are you blocking me? This is your father speaking" SCREAMING

I'm obsessed with this show and I can't BELIEVE there are only two (two??? two!!!) episodes left before we have to wait 1.5-3 business years for the next season. BULL FUCKING SHIT.

I love it I love it I love it go watch it right now.

Instead of doing the valuable, productive, adult activities I was supposed to do yesterday, I spent a good chunk of my time playing around with AO3 userscripts on Tampermonkey and squeeing in delight. Here are the ones I'm currently using.

To install these, get Greasemonkey or Tampermonkey on your internet browser. I use Firefox with Tampermonkey. Then navigate to each userscript's page, click install, and follow any other directions given to you by the userscript creator. It's very easy!

If none of these userscripts float your boat, here's the list of scripts that apply to AO3.

Userscripts I Have Installed

  • Floating Comment Box: This one lets you comment while reading, or highlight quotes and automatically copy them into your comment, italicized for your convenience, so you can annotate.
  • Browsing Notes: Not currently using this at the moment, but I still have it installed. It lets you make notes on the listings of fics, whether those be in your bookmarks, search results, history, etc. Saved locally.
  • Rekudos Converter: Allows you to auto-post a comment (you can make the comment's text whatever you want) when you go to click "Kudos" a second (third, fourth, one-thousandth) time. I have my comment options set to things like "Loved this <3" and "Bonus kudos!"
  • AO3 Savior: BLESS
  • AO3 Savior Config: You need this one to make ao3 savior work
  • Tracking: Lets you track different search query combinations, so you can check if there are any new works in MCU + AOU + HS AU + A/B/O + PWP (ew, can you imagine?) without having to type each tag out. The name makes me think it's going to track me evilly like all online websites these days, but it really is talking about tags and searches, I promise!
  • Quality Score (Adjusted Kudos/Hits Ratio): I love this actually! It's a variation off of "ao3 kudos/hits ratio," another handy script, but "Quality Score" adjusts the kudos/hits ratio to be more fair to multichap works. Not always an indication of quality or how much you'll enjoy the work, of course, but handy at a glance for choosing what to read!
  • Links to First and Last Chapter: Puts a little button that looks like music players' "skip" button" (>>) to get to the last chapter.
  • Remove Leading Spaces in AO3: Haven't seen this in action yet but I'm excited! I personally detest seeing works formatted with huge spaces in between the lines, and am prone to closing out of the fic as soon as I see it. Hopefully this will help me get over my bias :D
  • Estimated Reading Time: You put in your reading speed (mine's ~550 wpm apparently if I lowball it!) and it calculates the reading time. Useful for deciding if it's worth it to start a new 200ker now, or wait until morning, lol!
  • Kudosed and Seen History: This one is the GOAT. It uses data AO3 already associates with your account (which works you have bookmarked and kudosed) and then visually flags those works for you, so you can tell at a glance if you've already made a b'mark or left a kudos! And it doesn't start fresh when you install it, so it shows your kudos and bookmarks from as long as your account has used those features! You may need to play around with the refresh settings if you have had your account for a long time, just be warned. But it's really an excellent tool. Another thing it lets you do is mark works as "seen" and/or "skipped". That minimizes the works in question so you can browse through a long list of fics without having to remember which ones you hated when you last read them!
TL;DR: My absolute go-tos are AO3 Savior and Kudosed and Seen History. Enjoy!

I thought it was a good time to do another one of these, since I’ve just recently posted a bunch of drafts to AO3, and I figured someone might be interested in seeing what’s left in my draft folder.

Keep an eye out for these:

1.       These Happy Golden Years (Agent Carter) – This one is a series I am currently writing about Peggy Carter and her life married to Daniel Sousa. I recently rekindled an obsession with them, gorged myself on fic, and decided to write my very first ‘verse! Some upcoming stories:

a.       The Sousas dealing with the aftermath of Jack Thompson’s suicide

b.       Peggy being better suited for spy work than motherhood

c.       Daniel’s relationship with his family, particularly his father

2.       The Uncertainty Principle (Supernatural) – Cowritten with my irl cousin ghoulcoded aka creativewritinggirl. We started this shortly after Destiel became canon on November 5th, 2020, and we’re planning to release it on the 2nd anniversary (11/05/2022). It’s currently 26k and is unlikely to surpass 30k. It’s our version of a post-15.19 fixit, where Dean and Cas work out their shit and stop acting like fools (said lovingly).

3.       We’re Getting a Little Sick of the Prodigal Son (Breaking Bad) – this is my trans Jesse Pinkman that is *this* close to being finished; I just need to find some way to wrap it up. I kinda love the title, though. :)

4.       Pull It Out by the Roots (Supernatural) – My first Wincest! *audience cheers* No, no, not that kind of wincest. I wanted to write something dark about John’s abuse of Dean, and the premise lent itself to this.

5.       Grip (Supernatural) – Little ficlet about Dean’s hands and how they go from committing acts of violence to carrying out acts of love <3

Fics that are unlikely to see the light of day soon

1.       Untitled Alec Hardy disability fic (Broadchurch) - uh idk I had a #disabilitymoment this summer and drafted a lot of what I was privately calling in my head "cripfics". This is the one I have the most of but I don't really care enough about it to add to it.

2.       Untitled Sophie Roy eldest daughter syndrome fic (Succession) - Once season 4 comes out, who knows, I might change my mind!

3.       Untitled Yelenat fic (Marvel) – not BW movie-compliant. I wanted to write something about Yelena and Nat’s fractured memories after defecting, and something about their fucked up relationship to each other. They’re sisters they’re besties they’re mother and daughter they’re lovers they’re teacher and student they’re enemies they’re in love.

4.       God Bless Your Insides! (Shameless) – trans!Fiona. Also I love this title.

5.       In Essence (Supernatural) – My character study thesis fic of the brothers. Also I hate this title.

6.       Boxertown (Supernatural) — This was a fic about t4t Deancassie that hit a rut and is now stuck there.

7.       Mary, Did You Know (Supernatural) — Another trans!Dean fic, this time with gender troubled Mary. The title is from that Christmas song but I like it :)

8.       Trans Potion No. 9 (Supernatural) — Trans siblings Dean and Sam find a magic potion. Humor and feels ensue. This was going to be awesome (if only you could read my drafts!) but alas, it wasn’t in the cards.

Quit all social media this summer but now Interview with the Vampire's come out and I wish I could scream about it with someone! Augh!
Then I remembered I had this dreamwidth, so if anyone's listening, here's what's new with me.

Books
Recently read American Gods by Neil Gaiman, re-read Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, and devoured The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. Currently working on the sequel to The Sparrow, called Children of God. Personally I think the sequel doesn't fully live up to the original's incredible voice and story, but ymmv. Also just started What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw! by Agatha Christie for a nice little comfort read during meals.

Television
Rewatched Agent Carter, then rewatched the ending scene of Daniel and Peggy at LEAST 15 times. It drives me insaaaaane.
And I watched the first 3 episodes of Interview with the Vampire last night (on AMC I think--that's not where I saw it though) and went off the wall bonkers. Holy shit. As I recounted to a friend: "this show's got everything: gay sex, vampirism as a metaphor for gay sex, pretty accents, pretty actors, THEE confession scene of all time, unreliable narrators, metacommentary, gay sex, sword cane, and most of all, Jacob Anderson's #acting."
Earlier this month, was working through Tennant's seasons of Doctor Who, but it appears I've gotten a little side-tracked.

Movies
Horror for Halloween!
And I wanted to rewatch CA:TWS soon, so lookout for a Stevebucky fic resurgence in my AO3 bookmarks

Music
Red Comes in Many Shades - U.S. Girls
Cigar - Tamino
Dancing in the Moonlight - King Harvest
San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair) - Scott McKenzie
Love is Here to Stay - George Gershwin

Fandom
Reading: I overdosed on Agent Carter fics. See here.
Writing: Going to post a wiplist in a few mins, stay tuned!

That's all, folks.

I've written up a brief list of Jewish terms/concepts that are referenced in my fic Transliteration—a reference guide, if you will, for those who may be missing out on some cultural context. For further learning, I do encourage you to do your own research!

The Shema
: A prayer that’s like the “centerpiece” of temple services. It has a really pretty melody. Also spelled “sh’ma”; the english translation is roughly, “Hear, O Israel: Adonai is our G-d, Adonai is one.”

Lighting the Shabbos candles (and veil): Lighting candles during Shabbat (a holiday celebrated every Friday night) is a tradition done to mark the day of rest. It’s traditional to cover one’s head—men do it with yarmulkes/kippot, and women can do it with a yarmulke or a mantilla.

Tichel
: A hair covering or headscarf, typically worn by married Jewish Orthodox women. To cover one’s hair as a married Jewish woman, with a wig or with a tichel, is considered a mitzvah (good deed). In more recent years, some young, unmarried Jewish women have taken up the practice.

Matriarchs
: Four women from the Torah who mothered the children who would go on to become the heads of the 12 tribes of Israel, if I remember correctly. Most famous chicks in the Torah (see below).

Yahrzeit/yahrzeit candle
: The yahrzeit is the anniversary of someone’s death. On that day, one lights the yahrzeit candle in memorial.

“Mom was Jewish, so we’re Jewish”:
Judaism is traditionally passed down through the mother (matrilineality). Even if you weren’t raised by your mother to be Jewish, many Jewish people would still consider you to be a member of the tribe. Less traditional branches of Judaism acknowledge anyone with at least one Jewish parent to be Jewish.

Conservative vs Reform synagogues
: These are different branches of Judaism. There are more than just those two. They differ in how they interpret Jewish law and tradition. Note: Conservative Judaism has no relation to political conservatism. More about Jewish denominations here.

Bimah
: Stage in a synagogue that holds the ark (with the torah in it) along with chairs for the rabbi/cantor/etc.

Siddur
: A prayer book. Shoutout to Siddur Lev Shalem, all my homies love Siddur Lev Shalem.

Torah
: The first 5 books of the Hebrew bible (Hebrew bible = what Christians call the Old Testament). It’s handwritten on a large scroll (called sefer torah) and stored in a chamber in synagogues called the ark.

Tallis/tallit
: A prayer shawl. Traditionally worn by men? I think? But many Jewish women do wear them.

Hebrew names: when Jewish babies are given a name in Hebrew along with their English name, to be used in religious occasions (not in everyday life). Sometimes the Hebrew names are related to one’s English name, or start with the same letter; sometimes it’s after a relative’s Hebrew name; sometimes it’s totally random.

This is a repost off of my Tumblr, in case it ever goes down. Credit to akamine_chan's policy, from which I stole some of the wording.

The short version: Do as you will; I trust in your art and your inspiration. So, yes please.

The longer version...
To me, art is all about inspiring other to create. And if something I've created inspires you to create something, then I'm clearly doing this right.
Transformative art should always open to the possibility of further transformation. You don't need my permission to take any transformative work I've done and transform it even further. This includes but is not limited to: podfic, crafts, fanbound books, fanart, fanvids, and commentaries, but excludes translations and remixes (those have caveats). Other than that, this is blanket permission. I do ask that for any transformative works, please comment on the work in question, or reach out through Tumblr/email, to let me know what you're doing, that way, I can go nuts over and squee over how amazing your thing is.

For translators:
For translations, I ask that you post your translation to a site that allows you list the original author (Ficbook.net, for example). I'd prefer if your work was also posted on AO3 so that it's easy to attribute and link back, but that's not mandatory.

For fanartists &c:
Fanart, fanmixes, fanvids, and other amazing crafts are so, so welcomed! If you do make this kind of transformative work, I will promo you in the notes of the fic if you're okay with it, since I want you to get the recognition you deserve :)

For remixers:
If you'd like to remix one of my works or build upon it in any way (sequel, prequel, etc), I ask that you contact me first (ao3 comments, email, tumblr, whatever). The answer is nearly always going to be yes, but there are a few fics I'd rather other people don't touch, either because they are very personal or because I'm planning on expanding that particular universe.

For podficcers:
If you ever need to change words/omit dialogue tags/add dialogue tags/bend, fold, spindle or punch holes in one of my fics for better podficcing purposes, please do so at will! If you would like me to make alterations specifically for you, please feel free to ask -- I may not want to dive into an old fic, but it's worth a shot.
This is tricky work that deserves recognition, so I would really dig it if you mentioned it in notes, wherever you would normally have notes: "this fic is by [author] with (additions/alterations/ease-of-podfic transformations/contributions/however you want to describe it) by [your name]", or "adapted for podfic by [you] from a work by [author]" or whatever—whether that's in your post or in the "headers" in the podfic.

For reposters:
Please do not repost my work—that is, uploading to another site, even if credited. Do not post altered versions of my work - this extends but isn't limited to changing the characters' names to "adapt" it for another fandom or pairing. This is plagiarism and I'm not okay with it. Do not sell my work or show it to anyone involved with canon (reading an SPN fic to Misha Collins at a con, for example).

For fanbinders:
Fanbound books are fine (more than fine, actually) as long as they’re for personal collections and not resale. "Personal collections" includes gifting a book to a friend, or getting commissioned to make a book for someone's personal collection. Any way you slice it, it's such a tremendous honor. I find it unlikely anyone would *want* to do this for my work, since I don't post much longfic, but hey, I'm a fanbinder and wanted to cover my bases for any other fanbinders.

A final note:
I love collaboration and am extremely open to it, in whatever format: podfic, cowriting, arts, etc. You want to work together on something, contact me.
Additionally, even if transformative work already exists for a fic of mine, permission is still granted due to the two cakes rule.

For my podfic of An Unclean Man, I'm trying to translate Cas' voice into a cool audio effect. The author sets Cas' trueform voice apart from the normal text by bolding and centering it, which is a really cool way to do it. So my way of translating that into audio is adding the reverb and echo effects, making it sound like it's in someone's head or in a large room, and then layering the same clip under the audio, but reversed. This makes it sounds all whispery and cool, on top of being echoey. I'm still working out the kinks but it's sooo much fun to edit.
omniavespera: Frank Brunner's painting "Transit" (Default)
Editing podfic, while tedious, headache-inducing, and never-ending, does have its perks. One section of the fic I'm editing says that a TV show plays in the background while the character is thinking, and the fic quotes some dialogue from the show. So, not wanting to do things by halves, I spent an hour tracking down the exact episode based on just the quote the fic author had provided, finding the episode on Series9, watching the ep until I got to the quote, and recording the dialogue from the show to insert into the podfic. It was a nice break from the normal monotony of editing, and it sounds fabulous, if I do say so myself, when listening.
