Ok... that was a LOT.

SPOILERS for Interview with the Vampire (2022), episode 5, ensue below!

I just finished watching episode 5 of IWTV and it left a really bad taste in my mouth. From what I've seen online, a lot of other viewers are voicing similar thoughts. I have to go pick up my laundry so this won't be a long entry but I felt the need to say something to somebody!

First of all: I have so many questions about the fact that The Fight is from Claudia's perspective. She starts to lose consciousness... we hear Louis reassuring her that they're alright and it's over... Lestat says something about not wanting to fight anymore... and then the really heavy stuff happens with Lestat dragging Louis' battered and bleeding body to the courtyard and then the whole sky scene. Yikes!!!! It was not really enjoyable to watch at all, especially in comparison to the excellent previous 4 episodes that made me become enchanted with the series. But is there a possibility that due to Claudia not being fully 100% conscious after her head injury, what we're shown is exaggerated? I think it's possible but also somewhat unlikely. I also think the only reason this episode exists is for shock value and to drive up discussion of the show. More viewers angry/shocked = more online engagement. I hate it, that that's the way television works these days, but we have seen that pattern before.

I really do hope that the unreliable narrator rule is still in effect, and I find myself hoping for some sort of "grand reveal" that there's an alternate version of events where Lestat's still a toxic bitch but not a full-on perpetrator of extreme domestic violence. I loved Lestat's characterization up til now (keep in mind I'm looking at the show as someone who's only halfway  through the IWTV book and knows nothing about the rest of the series) and I would hate to see this turn out to be true. I know I'm sounding a little bit TJLC-y with all the "it could be fake! maybe it's all a lie! the show wouldn't really fail us, would they???". Maybe the show did just stop aligning with fans' wishes, and that's just how it happened. No television show is ever going to be 100% perfect and we shouldn't expect it to be. But I do really wish they could have handled it better instead of pulling the old "Include rape and domestic violence for shock value only" trick, because it's really unpleasant to watch.

Will I be watching next week? Yes. Am I excited? Not really! And that's a shame.
